Frequently Asked Questions

When mixing a cocktail, should I use cubed or crushed ice?

The answer is truly preference. If you think the cocktail would benefit from "watering down" or some additional water content, use crushed ice. If you want to preserve the pure integrity of the drink, use cubed, as less water will melt into the liquid mixture. I change my preference depending on my mood and/or the tasked drink.

When making a Poinsettia Cocktail, should I use prosecco or champagne?

You should use the one that you already have on hand, as it is most economical. Both will produce a fabulous end result!

What type of glass should I serve my Poinsettia Cocktail in?

I like to serve this drink in a champagne flute.

What garnishes should be on-hand?

I like to garnish my Poinsettias with fresh cranberries and rosemary. It's also fun to freeze the cranberries, which make de facto ice cubes. I usually just garnish with fresh, but that option exists based on preference.

What is triple sec?

Triple sec is one of my favorite cocktail ingredients; it's an orange-flavored liqueur that originated in France. I typically purchase DeKuyper.

Ingredients, Shopping List: Poinsettia Cocktail

Triple Sec: Orange liqueur -- one of my always on-hand ingredients for cocktails.

Champagne or Prosecco: Of choice. I typically recommend going low-end, as it is a mixed drink.

Cranberry Juice: Purchase 100% cranberry juice, not a mix.

Fresh Cranberries: For garnish.

Fresh Rosemary: For garnish.

Making This Drink at Centre College

JC Phelps, Centre College, Kentucky Blogger

Many of y'all know that I am a proud alumnus of Centre College, a small liberal arts college in Danville, Kentucky. I was delighted to be invited into the kitchen of the president's mansion to make this Poinsettia! I was joined by President Moreland and Dr. Riegelman (a Centre legend) -- fun was had by all!
