Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate

Hey, y'all! There's sweet tea and then there's Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate. My late Great-Grandmother, Elizabeth Phelps, started making it for my family. It's a deep south recipe that was always in my refrigerator growing up (and still is)!

Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate is a concentrated sweet tea. You start by adding it to a glass - the amount is based on how sweet you want your tea - and then you add water and stir. In a matter of seconds, you have the best tea this side of the Mason-Dixon Line!

Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate

Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate Ingredients

  • 1 ⅓ c. loose Lipton tea (needs to be loose tea)
  • 4.5 c. boiling water
  • 4.5 c. sugar

How to Make Sweet Tea Syrup Concentrate

  1. Steep the loose Lipton tea in water for 5 minutes. Strain through a coffee filter.
  2. Add the sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Store sweet tea syrup in a syrup dispenser in the refrigerator.
  3. To serve, add a small amount of syrup over ice in a glass and fill with water. Stir and serve with a lemon wedge. You will sweeten to taste; the more syrup you add, the sweeter the tea.

Pro Tips For Making This Recipe

  1. You need to use loose leaf tea for this recipe. I always use Lipton.
  2. Adjust the amount of syrup that you put in your glass based on how sweet you like your tea. You can always add more - be conservative in the beginning!

Living in Ireland, I had never heard of this before (I mean look, we just have weather instead of seasons), but with a few unusually warm days, I decided to surprise my tea obsessed friends with it and everyone absolutely adored it. I have a feeling your recipe might be spreading across Ireland now. 😉

I live in Kentucky too and know how important it is to have sweet tea ready to serve too. I absolutely love your recipe! The syrup is simple to make and tastes amazing. I’ll definitely be making more this summer.
