Hey, y'all! Looking for your new favorite snack? Allow me to introduce you to Hawaiian Chex Mix. This is a recipe that was unknown to me until last week; that said, with one bite, I quickly fell in love.
I'd like to thank my friend Chef Kristin Smith for this recipe that she demonstrated for me. The inspiration for her recipe was her friend at the Hawaiian Pie Company. Food connects us all - isn't that a beautiful thing?
Hawaiian Chex Mix Recipe
This partnership was facilitated with Chef Kristin Smith through Lake Cumberland Tourism Somerset-Pulaski County CVB. Kristin and I are working together during the Master Musicians Festival in the VIP tent. This would be the perfect recipe to make and bring to the festival!

Hawaiian Chex Mix Ingredients
- 2 c. pretzels
- 2 c. plain bugles
- 2 c. honeycomb cereal
- 2 c. rice chex cereal
- 2 c. plain corn chips
- ½ stick of butter, melted
- ⅓ c. vegetable oil
- ¼ c. honey
- ⅓ c. white sugar
- 3 tbsp. sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp. soy sauce
- 2 tbsp. hot sauce

How to Make Hawaiian Chex Mix
- Preheat oven to 250F.
- Over medium heat, melt butter in a saucepan. Add vegetable oil, honey, sugar, soy sauce, and hot sauce to the melted better. Cook over the heat, whisking constantly, until sugar has dissolved. The sauce does not need to thicken (nor should it).
- In a large bowl, mix together pretzels, bugles, honeycomb cereal, rice chex cereal, and corn chips. Pour sauce and sesame seeds over mixture and mix until all of the chex mix is evenly coated.
- Spread the chex mix onto baking sheets in a flat, even layer. Cook for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
- Store in an air-tight container + enjoy!

Pro Tips For Making This Recipe
- Do not allow the sauce to thicken over the heat; you simply want to all of the ingredients to incorporate (the sugar should dissolve).
- If you do not have all of the chex mix ingredients, the inputs are truly flexible. The goal with the base is to provide a mix of salty and sweet.
- Be sure to stir every 15 minutes!
Frequently Asked Questions
To allow the chex mix to have a maximum life span (that is... if you can keep yourself from devouring it!), store in an airtight container.
