How to Make Chocolate Poke Cake

  1. Prepare the Devil's Food cake mix according to the package directions. Bake in a 9×13-inch pan, then let the cake cool completely.
  2. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the cooled cake.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the 3.9-ounce chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of milk until it begins to thicken. Immediately pour the pudding over the cake, making sure it fills the holes, then spread the remaining pudding evenly over the top.
  4. Refrigerate the cake for 1 hour.
  5. For the topping, whisk together the powdered sugar, 5.9-ounce chocolate pudding mix, and 1 cup of milk until smooth. Fold in the Cool Whip, then spread the mixture evenly over the chilled cake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use homemade cake instead of boxed mix?

Absolutely!

Can I freeze this cake?

You sure can. Just wrap it tight and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

Can I use whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?

You can, but Cool Whip holds up better for chilling and serving later.

I started JCP Eats as a place to share the recipes, traditions, and flavors I grew up with, along with the dishes that have found a permanent place at my table. I’m so glad you’re here.
