Ingredients
  

  • 750 ml. dry red wine 1 bottle
  • ¼ c. orange liqueur
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 4 tbsp. maple syrup
  • Optional garnishes: citrus slices, orange, lemon, and/or lime, extra cinnamon sticks, extra star anise, cranberries.

Instructions
 

  • Combine all ingredients (except garnishes) in a large saucepan and stir well.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for at least 15 minutes, or up to 3 hours.
  • Strain out the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise using a fine mesh strainer.
  • Serve the mulled cider warm in heatproof glasses, and garnish as desired.

Notes

  • Use a dry red wine with good acidity, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Zinfandel, for the best flavor profile in your mulled wine.
  • Don't have orange liqueur on hand? You can substitute it with orange juice to maintain the citrus profile, or brandy for a delicious kick!
  • If you want a stronger orange flavor, add additional orange liqueur or a hearty splash of fresh orange juice.
