How to Make Homemade McDonald's Holiday Pies

  1. Preheat that oven to 350°F. Go ahead and line a baking sheet with parchment paper while you’re at it.
  2. Unroll your pie crusts and cut each one into 4 even rectangles.
  3. Mix up the filling. In a medium bowl, whisk together the pudding mix, cold milk, and yellow cake mix until smooth. Stir in a tablespoon of sprinkles for good measure.
  4. Spoon the filling onto half of your pie crust rectangles, leaving a little room around the edges so they don’t bust open.
  5. Top them off with the other rectangles. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  6. Cut 3 little slits in the top of each pie so they can breathe while baking.
  7. Make a quick egg wash by beating the egg with a tablespoon of water. Brush it over each pie, then sprinkle a few more sprinkles on top.
  8. Bake for 15–20 minutes until they’re golden brown and smell like heaven.
  9. Serve warm and watch folks fall in love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use puff pastry instead of pie crust?

Absolutely! Puff pastry will give you a flakier, more buttery bite. Just keep an eye on it while baking as it tends to brown a little quicker than pie crust.

Do I have to use yellow cake mix?

You sure don't. Yellow cake mix gives these pies that classic sweet flavor, but feel free to mix and match different flavors of cake mix and pudding mix to find your favorite combination.

How do I store leftovers?

If you’ve got any left (bless your heart for having that kind of self-control), pop them in an airtight container and keep them on the counter for up to 2 days. You can reheat them in the oven or air fryer to crisp them back up.

Can I use homemade pie crust?

Of course! If you’ve got a good recipe passed down from Grandma, go for it. Just make sure it’s rolled thin enough to bake evenly.

Can I make these gluten-free?

You can try using a gluten-free pie crust and cake mix. Just be sure to check your pudding mix too because some brands are gluten-free, some aren’t.
