Cajun Shrimp Dip Recipe: Easy Seafood Appetizer

The key to this recipe? The balance between the creaminess of the cheese, the flavor of the shrimp, and the bold addition of cajun/creole seasoning.

Recipe FAQ

What’s my choice of cajun/creole seasoning?

While I enjoy several, and I suggest that you use your favorite one, I don’t think that Old Bay Seasoning can be beat.

Do I need any special equipment for this recipe?

Not necessarily; that said, I like to make my dips in a cast iron skillet. Additionally, I like chopping my vegetables for dips in my food processor. It makes them uniform in size and is so much easier than chopping with a knife!

What kind of shrimp should I use?

Totally up to you. You could purchase shrimp that are pre-cooked or you could choose to make the shrimp on your own. If you do, don’t worry about seasoning the shrimp — the flavor will come from the dip itself. If you are trying to save time, I think it’s best to buy higher-quality, frozen, fully-cooked shrimp. Simply thaw and chop!

If I’m cooking shrimp, how do I know when it’s done?

If you choose to cook the shrimp, you will know when they are done when they become pink in color. Don’t overcook!

Equipment

  • cast iron skillet
  • Food Processor

Ingredients

  • 1 lb shrimp fully-cooked, deveined, tails off, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper red, yellow, or orange
  • 1/2 vidalia onion chopped
  • 3 stalks celery chopped
  • 1 block cream cheese softened
  • 3/4 c mayonnaise
  • 2 c cheddar cheese shredded
  • 6-8 oz parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp cajun/creole seasoning (such as Old Bay) more to taste if desired
  • chopped parsley for garnish
  • chips or bread for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400F.
  • Cook the shrimp if they are not already cooked. I recommend buying frozen, high-quality, fully-cooked shrimp to make the recipe easier. If you purchase those, simply thaw, remove tails, and chop. If cooking the shrimp yourself, simply cook in boiling water until the shrimp are pink in color. Do not overcook.
  • Chop all vegetables: bell pepper, vidalia onion, and celery. I like to roughly chop with my food processor (don't over-pulse); however, you can chop on a cutting board with a knife.
  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until uniformly mixed. Pour into a seasoned cast iron skillet and spread evenly.
  • Cook for roughly 30 minutes. Remove from oven, garnish with chopped parsley, and serve warm. I like serving this dip with Tostitos® Scoops!® Tortilla Chips, LAY’S® Classic Potato Chips, and/or a baguette.
