Pride Month 2018: eBay + GLAAD

Hey, y’all!

This Pride Month, I am honored to be teaming up with eBay and GLAAD; However, pride isn’t just a month of the year for me – it’s a lifestyle.

#Pride2018 #eBayforCharity

Growing up gay in Southern Kentucky wasn’t always the easiest of experiences. I constantly feared being ostracized, marginalized, judged, and bullied. As an adult, I changed that narrative – the only thing that I fear is not being able to loudly and proudly live my life as my authentic self. For this, I am grateful and many thanks are due to the organizations and individuals that have advocated for our rights as LGBTQ citizens.

This year, eBay is celebrating Pride Month by raising funds for GLAAD, a nonprofit that promotes LGBTQ acceptance.  Visit http://bit.ly/eBayPrideMonth to purchase exclusive Pride-themed pins, donate for a chance to hang with the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and more. The best part is 100% of the proceeds will benefit GLAAD! Donations start at just $10.

For over 30 years, GLAAD has been at the forefront of cultural change, accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ community. What a worthy cause, y’all!

As I always say, Happy Eating, Happy Traveling, Happy Living!

Memorial Day 2018: Jimmy Buffett + Lake Erie + Cleveland, Ohio

Hey, y’all!

I recently went up to Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate Memorial Day with my friends Shelby and Evie.

If you didn’t know, I was born a Parrothead. I would truly struggle to tell you how many Jimmy Buffett concerts I have attended. While I’ve been to many shows, his are, by far, my favorites. He plays the classics. The fan base — well, we are an interesting one. Always lively, always fun, always dressed to the nines for the occasion. One of the reasons that I love his concerts so much is that my father, the late JC Phelps, was a huge Parrothead. When I listen to his music, I feel a level of connectivity with him and my childhood.

My friend Evie’s family is from the Cleveland area and they live right on Lake Erie, which was so beautiful. I walked the shoreline early one morning and found so much peace in doing so. It was my first time at a Great Lake!

Another highlight of the experience was eating at Barrio in Lakewood, Ohio. The food – and drinks – were great. I also loved the decor. Prior to the Buffett concert, we shared a pitcher of blood orange margaritas; if you don’t have a margarita when you see Buffett, you’re doing it wrong in my book.

While it was a quick trip, it was a fun one – and one that I will certainly remember.

Fins up, Parrotheads!

As always, Happy Eating, Happy Traveling, and Happy Living!

SpiropaLOUza 2018, Presented by 502 Bar & Bistro

Hey, y’all!

I’m writing to tell you about an event here in Louisville that you do not want to miss: SpiropaLOUza 2018, Presented by 502 Bar & Bistro!

spiro

At this event, hip-hop and country will collide in a philanthropic night to benefit research efforts to cure Cystic Fibrosis! How can you say no to that combination?

Nappy Roots will headline the inaugural SpiropaLOUza, while also being joined by country music duo Branch & Dean. The event is on June 9th, 2018 from 5:00-10:00PM at the Norton Commons Amphitheater.

To quote the press release, “Nappy Roots, best known for hits “Awnaw”, “Po’ Folks”, and collaboration “Good Day”, formed as a group in the late 90s when they were students at Western Kentucky University. They recently  launched a watermelon kolsch in collaboration with Against the Grain Brewery, endearingly called “Watermelon, Chiquen, & Gritz” after their first full-length album. The beer will be featured at the event.
Country duo Branch & Dean, national celebrity ambassadors for the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, have a vested interest in finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Steve Branch’s distinctive vocals anchor the duo’s breakthrough hit The Dash, a tribute to his 23-year-old son, Theron, who died from cystic fibrosis in 2013. Following his son’s death, the group began touring the country to raise support and awareness for CF.”

All proceeds from this event will benefit Cure CF, Inc. – a Louisville-based non-profit
dedicated to fundraising for research to cure Cystic Fibrosis.

You can attend this event, enjoy awesome music, and help fund Cystic Fibrosis research for only $30; a reserved parking pass can also be purchased for $10. To purchase tickets, visit: http://www.curecf.com/spiropalouza.

JCP Eats is proud to partner with charity events around the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It is my belief that we, as people, have a moral obligation to help those less privileged, less fortunate, and those that suffer. This is a very worthy cause and I hope that each of y’all will attend!

As always, Happy Eating, Happy Traveling, Happy Living!

Get To Know JCP Eats: 24 Facts, 24th Year

Hey, y’all!

My best friend Shelby, along with Evie, recently hosted a belated 24th birthday party for me here in Louisville; I was out of the country on my actual birthday, May 11th. The party was cactus-themed, which if you know me, you are aware of how iconic that is. Cupcakes, champagne, and personalized toasts from the guests, some of the most important people in my life – what a blessing! I am immensely grateful for the talented, amazing, loving people that are in my life.

c6a50f67-2e37-456d-8b97-c025225686b5

There have been many new faces around JCP Eats as of late – thus, as I begin year 24 of my life, I thought that I would take this opportunity to tell y’all 24 facts about me.

  1. My name is Jacob C. Phelps – however, I go by JC. I didn’t pick up this habit until my father, the late JC Phelps, died when I was 15 years old. Going by JC is a way that I honor his memory and legacy; furthermore, it enables me to maintain a level of connectivity with him in my present life.
  2. I strongly believe in simple food, for it can often be the most palatable. My three favorites are good cheese, good bread, and lobster.
  3. Though I’m not much of a drinker, my go-to is a gin and tonic with two limes (a non-negotiable).
  4. I graduated from Centre College with degrees in Economics and Finance. From there, I obtained my MBA from the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University. Currently, I am enrolled as a full-time law student at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville.
  5. I have many professional goals in life. First and foremost, I want to be an attorney, preferably in the corporate or financial world; eventually, I would love to open up my own practice. Alongside that, it would be a dream to also be a part-time college professor. Lastly, I don’t see JCP Eats going anywhere – it’s my passion. I never plan to give up this job. I’m all about that #MultipleHustles life.
  6. If I could time travel back to one event, I would go back to move and groove at Woodstock.
  7. My family has deep roots to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, tracing back to Daniel Boone and Ft. Boonesborough. When we left the fort, we set up base in modern-day Russell County, Kentucky. Phelps Acres Farm was homesteaded in 1798 and I was proudly raised on that very land. I look forward to living on the farm once again in the future.
  8. I am an avid bargain shopper – vintage shopping, estate sales, thrifting, and discount stores are my jam. It would be really fun if I could incorporate that into the lifestyle section of my website.
  9. My journey in food blogging, social media, and Instagram started out of eating disorder recovery. I started taking photos of my food to change my relationship with food. The personal growth that JCP Eats has catalyzed in my life is a blessing – and one that I am forever indebted to.
  10. I am a budding world traveler. I have been to several countries, 16 at the moment, yet my goal is to hit 100. My next country will be in June – voy a Cuba! The next destinations that I have my sights set on are Iceland, England, Ireland, Jamaica, and Aruba.
  11. One of my goals is to start a nonprofit that continues my great-grandmother’s devotion to literacy in Southern Kentucky and Appalachia. I want this to be a way for both myself and future generations of my family to continue our devotion to philanthropy.
  12. Fact: I need a fan on me at all times; also, I keep my apartment at 63 degrees.
  13. I am a very talkative person – an extrovert to say the least. I think this comes from my experiences as a child. When I was born, the majority of the muscles in my mouth were undeveloped. This led to intensive speech therapy, speech hangups, and, ultimately, the inability to speak at times. Verbalization is thus something that I will never take for granted and is the reason why I love to strike a conversation and never know a stranger.
  14. One of my inspirations for pursuing a legal career is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Notorious RBG is a powerhouse – and one that has inspired me on a plethora of levels.
  15. I have a strong, unwavering obsession with cacti and succulents. My apartment is full of them!
  16. I once crashed a post-wedding celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana. So much fun!
  17. I came out as a homosexual at the age of 18 – I was a first year student at Centre College. Luckily, I had an overall good experience and I haven’t looked back since.
  18. In the food world, I am inspired by the Barefoot Contessa. Ina’s cooking is simple, refined, yet extremely elegant. I very much relate to her style.
  19. I am known for my sandals – I wear them all year. Unless I have to be formal, catch me in my Rainbows, my Birkenstocks, my Tevas, or my Chacos. No apologies.
  20. I am a major TV buff. My favorite shows include Sex and the City, Parks and Recreation, RuPaul’s Drag Race, the Office, Gilmore Girls, Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, the Barefoot Contessa, Grace & Frankie, Friends, Gossip Girl, and most currently, Riverdale.
  21. Music is a big part of my life. My most listened to album is “Sound and Color” by the Alabama Shakes.
  22. When I am not taste testing for JCP Eats, my go-to meal at home is orzo. It’s simple, filling, and very customizable.
  23. Grocery shopping is a passion of mine. I am one of those people that walk up and down every aisle. My six must-buy items? Feta cheese, lemons, cotton candy grapes, orzo, cucumbers (especially English cucumbers!), and Grey Poupon Country Dijon Mustard.
  24. My blood is comprised of sweet tea and Diet Coke; both are necessary for a life well-lived. Case closed.

I hope that these facts enable y’all to feel more connected to me. I’m not an online account, I’m a person. A Kentuckian with varied tastes, quirks, and idiosyncrasies. It’s an honor to share my life on a daily basis online and I consider it to be an utmost privilege to get to know all y’all along the way. Thanks for your impact during the last year of my life – cheers to year 24!

Graduation Dinner at Butchertown Grocery

Hey, y’all!

I am giddy to write about my recent collaboration with Butchertown Grocery. If you have ever asked me for dining recommendations in the city of Louisville, chances are that I have mentioned their fabulous offerings in the heart of Butchertown. When they reached out to collaborate after my best friend Shelby’s graduation from Centre College, I knew that it was the perfect venue to celebrate the most special person in my life.

To quote their website, “Housed inside a modest 19th-century brick building in the heart of Louisville’s best neighborhood is the award-winning Butchertown Grocery. Serving refined food in a former family market, we are proud to be voted amongst the nation’s top restaurants.”

As for the history behind the name of Butchertown Grocery, “In the early-to-mid 1900s, our building was home to a family-owned grocery called Gunkel’s. More than just a corner market, Gunkel’s was a gathering place where locals came to buy produce and meats, and chew the fat with the owner, Hattie Gunkel. We tip our hat to the Gunkels – and to the tradition of bringing people together through great food.”

I love how they have paid homage to Louisville history!

Now to the best part – the delicious, mouthwatering food.

3de51aed-c7eb-4440-8ead-67830b4a977f

We started with this pear + cheddar stuffed phyllo. The combination was, to say the least, brilliant.

Next was this filling, simple breakfast croissant: bacon, egg, and cheese. However simplistic, the flavors were top-notch. It was arguably the best croissant that I have had in years, rivaling those that I had in France.

Escargot – need I say more? One of my favorites!

0555492c-9d22-4154-91c2-54416dcc886c

The most fabulous oysters in Louisville – trust me on that assertion, y’all.

If you put an egg on anything, I’m down – especially if it’s over this pasta. Delicious!

Is any meal complete without an order of beignets? Not in my world!

Be sure to check out Butchertown Grocery in the heart of Butchertown on 1076 E. Washington St. Louisville, KY 40206. They can be reached at 502-742-8315.

Butchertown Grocery is open for lunch Monday-Friday from 11AM-2PM, for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11AM-3PM, and for dinner everyday from 5PM-10PM.

Gifting A Unique Wooden Watch for Her/Him + Giveaway!

Hey, y’all!

Are you needing the perfect gift for the special woman or man in your life? Is a timepiece on your shopping list for your recent graduate? Have you always wanted to try a unique, wooden watch? This post is for you!

I am so excited to be partnering with JORD on this post! Wood watches by JORD are the finest, luxury, all-natural wooden watches created for both genders. Check out options for men here and women here.

Which watch did I choose? The Fieldcrest Series Zebrawood and Maple! In person, this watch is absolutely stunning. Zebrawood has an intricate grain pattern, which amplifies your aesthetic and style level. As Lou Reed said, “Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side!”

c371f515-45f6-4ffa-8c74-8dc1fea542bc

There are many things to love about JORD. First off, their watches are unisex. Gender normalizations and groupings are so 2017, don’t you agree?

Secondly, their watches are highly customizable! I have a very large wrist and was relieved to find out that the sizing is customizable. If you are plus-sized like I am, this is a dream come true!

f83eeca8-9f15-4915-82ce-6270b3c77a7c

Thirdly, you can also engrave your watch! As a southerner, I am often guilty of the “if it walks, monogram it” mentality. I like to put JCP on everything – it provides a sense of personalization, uniqueness, while also paying homage to my late father (JCP, as well).

Lastly, I am complimented each and every time that I wear this watch out! It has quickly evolved into my most-complimented accessory; for that, I am tickled pink, y’all.

Be sure to check out the plethora of delicious, wooden arm candy they offer on their online shop!

However, it doesn’t end there – I have a GIVEAWAY!

The giveaway ends on June 3rd, 2018 at 11:59pm! Be sure to enter!
