Asian Ginger Brussels Sprouts

Hey, y’all – Happy Day 17 of Blogmas! Blogmas is a series that I am bringing to the blog this year (and hopefully in subsequent years) that will provide y’all with a new recipe every day of December through Christmas. How fun is that? Today I’m excited to be sharing my recipe for asian style brussels sprouts. The best part? They have a Kentucky twist, as the ginger profile is achieved via the incorporation of Winchester-made Ale-8-One.

This post is in partnership with Ale-8-One. Thank you for supporting those that make JCP Eats possible. All opinions expressed, as always, are my own. Originally posted December 2020, updated September 2021.

FAQ

Why do I use Ale-8-One in my recipes?

Ale-8 is Kentucky’s signature drink. I love it. It has a wonderful ginger profile, which pairs well with many dishes (especially citrus-forward dishes and asian dishes). If a recipe uses ginger, you can substitute Ale-8-One for an elevated local flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. Brussels sprouts halved + chopped
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1/8 c. Ale-8-One
  • 1.5 tsp. sesame oil
  • 1 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 3 tbsp. honey I prefer to use hot honey
  • 1 tsp. minced garlic
  • Black pepper to taste
  • EVOO

Instructions

  • Heat extra virgin olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add Brussels sprouts (halved – or chopped if you prefer).
  • Cook Brussels sprouts for 5 minutes and then add in Ale-8-One and minced garlic. Cook for another 3-5 minutes.
  • Add in soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Cook until tender and/or the Brussels sprouts have reached your desired level of crispiness. JC’s tip: right before my sprouts are done, I typically turn the heat up to high to rid of some of the liquid + increase the crispiness of the sprouts.
  • Top with honey (or hot honey) + serve warm!
  • Enjoy!

About Ale 8 One

Launched in July of 1926, Ale-8-One is the only Kentucky-invented soft drink still in existence. It was invented by G. L. Wainscott and was named via one of America’s first slogan contests at the Clark County Fair. “A Late One” – the winning entry – was a pun adopted for its witty description. From that, a Kentucky legacy transpired.

You can purchase Ale-8 in many locations across Kentucky, including Kroger. Can’t find it? Don’t worry! You can shop Ale-8-One here.
