Remembering the Queen of Soul

Hey, y’all!

I’m coming to you with a non-food post. Today – August 16th, 2018 – is a sad day for me. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, passed away. Not only was she the first woman to gain a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she was, is, and will forever be the soundtrack to my life.

When I was in kindergarten, we were asked about our favorites — favorite foods, activities, etc. I said that my favorite thing was Aretha Franklin; while I meant to say that my favorite activity was listening to Aretha’s music, my point was clear: she had a very large impact on me from a very young age.

My father died when I was 15; when that happened, Aretha’s music was one of the few things that truly comforted me.

Through every step of my educational journey, Aretha has been there; I open a textbook and immediately shuffle songs by the Queen.

On every flight, in every city, in every country — she’s in my ear.

I’m saying all of this to say that she has resonated with me very deeply; for that, I thank her.

To celebrate her legacy, here are a few of my favorite songs by the Queen of Soul

1. (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

“When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along to claim it
I didn’t know just what was wrong with me
‘Til your kiss helped me name it
Now I’m no longer doubtful, of what I’m living for
And if I make you happy I don’t need to do more”

2. Do Right Woman, Do Right Man

“Take me to heart and I’ll always love you
And nobody can make me do wrong
Take me for granted, leaving love unsure
Makes willpower weak and temptation strong”

3. Since You’ve Been Gone (Sweet, Sweet Baby)

“Tell you that I’ll stay true
And give you just a little time
Wait on me baby
I want you to be all of mine
I just get so blue, since you’ve been gone”

4. The House That Jack Built

“This was the land that he worked by hand
The was the dream of an upright man
This was the room that was filled with love
This was a love that I was proud of
This was a life of a love I planned
Of a love and a life we loved
Of the house that Jack built.
Remember this house!”

5. Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)

“Why did you have to decide
You had to set me free
I’m gonna swallow my pride
I’m gonna beg you to (please baby please) see me
I’m gonna walk by myself
Just to prove that my love is true
Oh, for you baby
Until you come back to me
That’s what I’m gonna do”

6. Son of a Preacher Man

“The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, he was, ooh, yes he was”

7. Don’t Play That Song (You Lied)

“Don’t play that song for me
‘Cause it brings back memories
Of days that I once knew
The days that I spent with you”

8. I Say A Little Prayer

“Forever and ever, you’ll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I love you
Together, forever, that’s how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me”

9. Think

“I ain’t no psychiatrist, I ain’t no doctor with degrees
It don’t take too much high IQ
To see what you’re doing to me”

10. Angel

“Gotta find me an angel, to fly away with me
Gotta find me an angel, ooh and set me free
My heart is without a whole, I don’t want to be in love
I gotta find me an angel in my life, in my life”

11. Oh Me Oh My (I’m A Fool For You Baby)

“To make you laugh, I would be a fool for you
Although the people turn and stare
I really don’t care
I would give my everything to keep you, boy
It breaks my heart when you’ve not there

I’ll stage a ballet on a tabletop
Command performance finger size
And although I ain’t got no tune
My show ain’t gonna fly
I’ll find the music there in your eyes

Oh me, oh my, I’m a fool for you baby (baby now)
(Fool for you) Oh me oh my (I)
I am crazy (crazy baby)
Oh me, oh my (me oh my)
Yeah I’m a fool for ya baby”

12. Chain of Fools

“For five long years
I thought you were my man
But I found out, I’m just a link in your chain
Oh, you got me where you want me
I ain’t nothin’ but your fool
Ya treated me mean
Oh you treated me cruel”

13. Respect

“I ain’t gonna do you wrong while you’re gone
Ain’t gonna do you wrong cause I don’t wanna
All I’m askin’
Is for a little respect when you come home (just a little bit)”

Narrowing down her discography to 13 favorites was not easy; however, that is truly a testament to the powerhouse that she was.

All of the respect, not just a little bit, for you, Aretha.

Rest easy.

My best,

JC
